Passport

A passport is a valid means of identification allowing you to travel to countries outside of the Netherlands. Everyone over the age of 14 years is required to provide a valid means of identification in the Netherlands. And abroad everyone, including children of all ages, must be able to provide proof of their identity. Only when you have the Dutch nationality, can you apply for a Dutch travel document. You can have both a passport and an identity card.

You have to personally apply for a passport or identity card in the municipality where you are registered. Collecting your new travel document must be done in person.

For a passport you need to have your fingerprints taken at the town hall.
You need to collect your travel document in person, within 3 months after applying, or else your travel document will expire.
When your travel document has expired and is no longer valid, you need to hand it in with your municipality.
When applying for a travel document for your child, you need to bring your child along with you.

You can personally pick up your travel document five working days after the date of application. If you urgently need to acquire your travel document, you can ask for a rush application.

Refugee passport

A refugee passport is a Dutch travel document for refugees. You can travel to countries outside of the Netherlands, with the exception of your country of origin. You can also use the refugee passport as a valid identification paper. A refugee passport is valid for a maximum of 5 years.

Foreigners passport

A foreigners passport is a passport for persons living in the Netherlands, not having the Dutch nationality. You can travel to countries outside of the Netherlands. It is a valid means of identification in the Netherlands. A foreigners passport is valid for a maximum of 5 years.
